White County’s Hallway Confrontation

White County’s spending questions have reached the hallway outside the treasurer’s office. Video published by Uncle Bob shows an exchange he identifies as county board chairperson Amanda Sutton Cannon speaking with county treasurer Mike Baxley on September 8, 2026.
Witnesses reportedly said Cannon was upset about the treasurer making financial records public. That account has been relayed to Monster News, but we have not independently confirmed it. The recording has no audible conversation. Monster News will contact Cannon for comment about the confrontation and the reported reason for it.
This is part of our investigation into a suspected pattern of questionable purchases involving White County Ambulance funds. Today, Monster News requested five years of records from the account commonly called the “Square account.”
Watch the exchange
Uncle Bob obtained and published the footage and laid out the spending dispute on White County Forum. He says he was not an eyewitness and clearly separates what he was told from what the recording shows. Readers should read his account alongside this report.
Video published by Uncle Bob. The first exchange is near the beginning. The full recording runs about 79 minutes and has no audible conversation.
Cannon is partly obscured by the wall during the exchange. Visible hand gestures make the conversation appear passionate to Monster News. That is our reading of the body language. The video cannot tell us the words spoken or how loudly anyone spoke. Watch it and judge the visible conduct for yourself.
Passion is welcome. Public records are, too.
Monster News likes passion in public officials. A fiery county chairperson can be an asset when that energy serves the public. We are asking where that energy was directed in this encounter.
If the reported account is accurate, and the objection was to the treasurer making spending records public, we disagree with that objection completely. Public officials should expect public spending to be examined. Releasing records that the public is entitled to see deserves support.
Monster News commends Baxley for providing financial records for public scrutiny. A treasurer should protect public money and help people understand where it went. Embarrassment over a purchase is no reason to keep its paperwork out of public view.
Follow the purchases
The boat-motor dispute is one starting point. Correspondence previously supplied to Monster News by Kathy Sands of The Villagers’ Voice describes an $11,900 payment involving a Suzuki motor and installation. Our investigation also includes questions about a professional drone associated with the ambulance service.
Rescue equipment can serve an important public purpose. The county’s use of a privately owned boat could also be a practical arrangement. Neither point removes the need to document authorization, payment, ownership, custody and any lease or reimbursement agreement.
We want the records showing what was bought, who was paid, who approved it and what the county received. The five-year request seeks the full ledger, statements, reconciliations, invoices, check images, signer authority and vendor identification records.
The drone deserves its own records trail. A 2024 Villagers’ Voice report forwarded to Monster News said donations paid almost all its cost. We will follow that funding and the equipment records rather than assume the whole purchase was tax-funded.
Questions for Cannon
Monster News will ask Cannon what prompted the September 8 exchange, whether it concerned the release of financial records, and whether she disputes the witnesses’ reported account. We also want to know what spending controls she believes were followed and what changes, if any, the county made after the boat-motor dispute.
We will seek Baxley’s account as well and report their responses in follow-up coverage.
The hallway footage raises questions. The ledger and supporting records are how we investigate the spending behind them. Monster News will follow both.
